Casale il Saùco

The Certosa of Padula is a UNESCO world heritage site about an hour and a half drive from Casale il Saùco. The monastery dedicated to Saint Lawrence dates back to the XIII century and is one of Southern Italy’s most beautiful baroque monuments. The Certosa is about 51.000 square meters and features 350 rooms, gardens and the world’s largest cloister. The palace also features the archaeological museum of Lucanian antiquities discovered during nearby excavations. The monastery has been the set of famous film’s as Once Upon a Time (1967), starring Sophia Loren and Omar Sharif, set in the era of Spanish domination.
